It’s the holiday season and it goes without saying that having to run to the store to pick up brown sugar, a staple ingredient for holiday baked goods, is a real pain in my holiday stockings. Why not just make it yourself so you never have to worry about having it in stock in your pantry.
Brown sugar is made up of two ingredients. Molasses and sugar. That’s it. It’s a one-to-one ratio. 1 cup of sugar to 1 Tbsp. of molasses. Easy peasy. I traded out white table sugar for this sugar:
You can find it at Walmart. And it’s non-GMO. You can also use organic sugar. Non-GMO is good enough for me.
Homemade Brown Sugar recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 T. Molasses
Directions:
Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix until well combined. Store in an airtight container.
Tips from the little red bird:
- You can make this in bulk and store in a cool place in your pantry. If brown sugar becomes hard, place desired amount of brown sugar in a safe microwaveable bowl. Heat in increments of 10 seconds or until brown sugar softens.
- To make dark brown sugar, add 2 T. of molasses per cup.
